Preferred aircraft: Fixed wing, like Grand Caravan, Kodiak 100, Bonanza TC. Basically anything that can fly 150 KIAS and is able to operate reliably between 10.000 and 15.000 ft, so a turbo prop or turbo charged piston might be in order.
The Rocky Mountains stretch more than 3,000 miles from northern Canada to New Mexico, forming the backbone of North America. Raised between 55 and 80 million years ago, they were later carved by powerful glaciers into the sharp peaks and deep valleys we see today. Along their spine runs the Continental Divide, directing rivers toward three oceans. The Rockies shape climate, history, and the landscape of an entire continent.
Our tour will explore extensively some of the most beautiful, iconic and breathtaking areas, starting at the northernmost stretches of the Rockies in Canada and ending at Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. It kind of makes sense to divide this tour into chapters, according to the regions we’ll fly over.
The Northern Wild
We begin where the wilderness feels endless. The Northern Rockies are remote, vast, and older than they look. Carved by ice and shaped by isolation, this is where the Alaska Highway cut through mountains in 1942, opening a road into the unknown. Rivers braid through deep valleys, and peaks like Mount Sir Alexander rise alone against the sky.
Ice and Stone
Entering the Canadian Rockies, glaciers dominate the story. Massive icefields feed rivers that will eventually reach three different oceans. These mountains were lifted millions of years ago, but their sharp edges were sculpted by the last Ice Age. Here, rock and ice define the skyline.
The Divide
Along the Continental Divide, water chooses its destiny. A raindrop falling on one ridge may end in the Pacific, the Atlantic, or the Arctic. This spine of North America separates climates, ecosystems, and weather systems.
Fire Beneath
Yellowstone reveals another force: fire. Beneath the plateau lies one of Earth’s largest volcanic systems. The calm forests and wide lakes conceal a restless geological engine that reshaped this region repeatedly.
The High Peaks
In Colorado, the Rockies reach their greatest height. Mount Elbert rises above all others, yet the range here was formed not by continental collision, but by an unusually shallow oceanic plate pushing far inland.
Stone to Desert
As the mountains stretch south, alpine forests give way to high desert. The Rio Grande carves deep gorges through uplifted plateau. Here the Rockies fade, but their influence continues — in rivers, climate, and history.

Bill Branham
Hello, DefragDad.
I’m 71 years old. I live in the Detroit, Michigan area. I am not a real pilot. All my flight experience began when MSFS2020 came out, and I still consider myself a newbie. This is due to several reasons, including having a lot of trouble with 2024 bindings and things just not working, and also feeling like an outsider when it comes to group flights. It’s not that everyone hasn’t been very friendly. It is more about my own insecurities. Maybe because it sounds like people know each other so well….and that’s a good thing.
ANYWAY, I came across this Rocky Mountains trip and it looks fantastic! It seemed to me to be a good opportunity to get to know some people. I’m sure I won’t be able to make them all, but my goal will be to do the entire trip from beginning to end, and if I miss a group flight, I’ll do the leg on my own.
I see it goes over or near the Bridger Wilderness in Wyoming, where I have done some backpacking. (Not as much as I would have liked.) Maybe not as majestic as other mountain areas, but true wilderness areas (No roads, just foot trails. Planes aren’t even allowed to fly below a certain altitude.)
Questions:
1. Will this be weekly? What time of day, and, approximately, how long will each group flight be? I probably should have asked this first.
I don’t want to do this now until I get more familiar with the group, but I do have a flight plan I created that your group might be interested in, and maybe someone would work with me to make it appropriate for the group. I used to have a Siberian Husky. Out of that, I became interested in the Iditarod dogsled race. They have 3 routes that they rotate each year. There are, of course, airports or strips that the bush pilots use to distribute food and supplies for the dogs. My take was different in that I wanted to fly as low as possible in order to get a little bit more of a feel for what the dogs and mushers would be seeing. Consequently, there are a lot of waypoints because it follows the trail and not just from airport to airport. It is around 1,000 miles (the race winner can do it in 9 days), so it is about 1/3 as long as the Rocky Mountain and currently in 15 legs about 1/2 an hour each. So, not going to do anything with it now. I just wanted to mention it and see if there might be any interest in it down the road.
Take care, Bill Branham, a.k.a. WmTConqueror
DefragDad
Bill, let me welcome you! It’s awesome that you found this little website, and I appreciate you taking the time to explain your thoughts.
I’m probably not the first to say this, but there’s no need to feel insecure, all of us have have started somewhere, and apart from having flown gliders when I was much younger, I’m not an experienced pilot either. One of our residents is a former airline Captain and I tend to ask him the silliest questions imaginable, and he’s usually quite willing to share his knowledge, as are we all.
I believe you’ll like our group, for two main reasons.
First, we’re not big. We have 3-4 regulars plus some people showing up every now and then, which means you’ll not drown in a sea of chatter from guys who don’t care about newcomers. It’s more like a flight sim family gathering, with people from all over the world.
Second, at the tender age of 48, I’m actually the youngest in the group. Most of the others are closer to your age — and overall, the atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly. I am pretty sure you’ll fit in perfectly.
To answer your questions:
1. It’s going to be a weekly event, yes. Most likely on Thursdays, at 20:00 UTC. Our flights usually last 2-3 hours.
2. We’re very much interested in suggestions from other pilots of our group when it comes to flight plans. Currently, on Tuesdays, we’re flying a tour created by Uitvreter (the airline Captain) who is leading us through Indonesia, see here: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/fss-indonesia-exploring-the-equatorial-emerald-multiplayer-tour/757947
And I think that your tour should be very interesting indeed, low and slow and “bushy”.
I’d like to invite you to our Discord server – that makes it easy for us to communicate, via voice or chat, whatever you prefer: https://discord.com/invite/TdXpW5r3ba
And from there we’ll work things out.
Looking forward to talk to you, Bill!
